Nicolas Cage to reprise Longlegs role in new universe film
Deadline has shared an exciting, exclusive report that there will be a new addition to the Longlegs horror universe as Paramount have obtained the rights, with original star Nicolas Cageย set to return. Distributed by Neon Pictures, the original film was written and directed by Osgood Perkinsย in his fourth feature and starred Maika Monroe,ย Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt.
Coming in as a horror, mystery and psychological thriller shake-up, Longlegs focused on an FBI agent (Monroe) who is tasked with discovering the truth about a string of murders committed across Oregon by a cult-obsessed serial killer played by Cage. Perkins’s film oversaw an immense creative and eye-catching marketing technique of avant-garde trailers and cryptic billboards relating to the mysterious investigation plot-line. This paid off as Longlegsย grossed a worldwide total of $128 million from its initial budget of just under $10 million, making it Perkins’s most commercially successful film as well as Neon’s highest-grossing release domestically and the most box office successful independent horror film of the year.
The film divided movie goers due to its involvement of mystery, crime and thriller with a psychological framework when it was initially emphasised as a horror, infamously cited as “the scariest film of the year.” Nonetheless, it also received a total of 25 award nominations across numerous outlets and won eight for screenwriting and its audio/visual composition.
It’s been confirmed Perkins will return as writer and director for the follow-up film, with Cage serving as producer alongside Perkins, Brian Kavanaugh Jonesย and Chris Ferguson.
It seems that Cage’s Longlegs character will be cemented as one of modern horror’s founding faces alongside Amy Madigan’s Aunt Gladys from Weapons (who is also receiving her own prequel spin-off) and Art the Clown from the Terrifier franchise.
