Weapons Aunt Gladys Prequel Is Official
A prequel to the critically acclaimed Weapons is underway. Under the working title, Gladys, returning filmmaker Zach Cregger will pen the script alongside Zach Shields (Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters).
Last year’s horror hit grossed over $270 million worldwide. Amy Madigan (The Hunt, Uncle Buck) won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her acclaimed portrayal of Aunt Gladys, the film’s primary villain.
In an interview with Deadline, Madigan described Gladys as “a woman who knows what she has to do, and she does it…all women in our business should have more of that confidence, myself included.”
New Line and Warner Bros. will pick up the prequel. Shields has worked with the latter before, most recently on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). In TV, Shields co-executive-produced Lady in the Lake for Apple, starring Natalie Portman.
Cregger himself envisions Gladys as an origin story, telling TheWrap that it will “feel very separate and stand on its own two feet.”
The filmmaker is keeping busy beyond the Weapons universe, writing and directing the highly anticipated Resident Evil adaptation for Sony. That film will reunite Cregger with Weapons star Austin Abrams.
Synopsis:
When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
