Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie Adds Paul Walter Hauser And Austin Abrams
In an exclusive report from Deadline, it has been confirmed that Paul Walter Hauser and Austin Abrams will star in Zach Cregger’s upcoming adaptation of Resident Evil for Sony Pictures.
This news comes following the success of Cregger’s recent horror movie Weapons. Cregger will be directing the movie, which is based on the Capcom’s popular video game franchise, as well as co-writing the project with Shay Hatten. Robert Kulzer, from Constantin Film, will produce the project alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
A plot synopsis remains unknown for the movie. The previous Resident Evil movies opted for a blend of horror, action and sci-fi but narratively veered further away from the source material with each instalment. However, this series is still one of the highest-grossing video game-based movie franchises, as the movies collectively grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide.
Paul Walter Hauser is best known for Apple TV+’s Black Bird which he won an Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards for as well as a SAG Award nomination. In 2025 alone, Hauser has starred in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun and Americana. He will next appear in the Bruce Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, and the upcoming Chris Farley biopic titled Farley, which is currently in development.
Abrams has appeared in recent projects such as Wolfs, Penelope, Do Revenge and even Cregger’s newest movie Weapons. He is also set to star in the upcoming movie Whalefall, as well as reprising the role of Ethan Lewis for the third season of HBO’s Euphoria.
Resident Evil is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 18th, 2026.
