Louis Paxton Teases The Waffle House Index as ‘Primarily Horror’
Director Louis Paxton has revealed that his next film, The Waffle House Index, is primarily a horror with a streak of humour, and confirmed that it will shoot next summer. The Apple Original Films and Plan B project stars Inde Navarette.
Speaking to The Feature, Paxton said: “It’s a mash-up that incorporates lots of different kinds of influences and threads. I would say it’s primarily horror, but it has elements of humour as well. I’ve never read anything like it.”
Paxton is keen to keep the plot under wraps. “The less you know about it, the better,” he said. The title, though, refers to a real measure used by US emergency management to gauge the severity of a disaster, based on whether local Waffle House restaurants stay open.

The script, written by Andrew Nunnelly, appeared on the 2025 Black List of the most-liked unproduced screenplays. Paxton said it caught his attention because it feels like the kind of original film audiences have been drawn to recently. “Things like Weapons and Obsession,” he said. “It’s original, it’s really smart, and it’s different, and that’s what excites me about it.”
Navarrette, who broke out in Focus Features’ horror hit Obsession in May, is also set to serve as an executive producer. She has since finished filming the thriller Invertigo and will play Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men reboot, due in cinemas on 5 May 2028.
Paxton was announced today as part of this year’s BAFTA Breakthrough cohort for his directorial debut feature, The Incomer, starring Domhnall Gleeson, Gayle Rankin and Grant O’Rourke. The film premiered at Sundance in 2026, where it won the NEXT Innovator Award, before opening at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
