The Hollywood Reporter is reporting Zach Cregger is in talks to write and direct a new movie based on Resident Evil, the iconic Capcom video game franchise.

Studios are reportedly fighting for the package, with four studios including Warner Brothers and Netflix currently locked in a bidding war.

The script will be co-written by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Rebel Moon Part 1 & 2). Constantin Film, which has held the screen rights to the Resident Evil franchise since the 1990s, will produce alongside PlayStation productions. Constantin Film has been the producer behind all previous movie products including 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and the short-lived 2022 live action series Resident Evil for Netflix.

It’s reported that this new film will be “a revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games”. Capcom‘s survival horror franchise has been running since 1996 with the most recent game Resident Evil: Village being released in 2021.

This bidding war is an interesting development in the story of the franchise. The original Milla Jovovich and and Paul W. S. Anderson franchise grossed $1.2 billion worldwide over six instalments which ended with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. But the most recent instalment, reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which adapted portions of the Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 video games was a critical and commercial disappointment, earning around $42 million globally. Furthermore Netflix’s live action show was cancelled after one season in 2022. But with a billion dollar IP on the table, it seems Resident Evil – like one of it’s zombies, will  keep coming back to life

Cregger’s previous directorial effort Barbarian was released in 2022. He will next be seen as a producer on this year’s Companion and as a writer-director on Weapons starring Julia Gardner and Josh Brolin, due out next year.
