Maya Hawke Will Lead The Adaptation Of ‘Magic: The Gathering’
Maya Hawke will star in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, Deadline reports.
No details have been revealed about the film’s premise or Hawke’s character, but the game is set across a multiverse of fantasy worlds, involving players who are engaged in a battle, acting as wizards known as Planeswalkers. Deadline, who first reported the news, expect Hawke to lead an ensemble cast, although no other cast announcements have been made.
Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are producing the live-action movie, with Matt Johnson set to direct. Johnson is also writing the screenplay with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.
This is an exciting project for Johnson, who is a longtime Magic: The Gathering game fan. Launched as a trading card game in 1993, it has since become a global phenomenon. There are dedicated conventions hosted worldwide and even a secondary market for rare and powerful cards.
As for Hawke, she is best known for her portrayal of Robin in the Netflix series Stranger Things which wrapped its fifth and final season last year. She’s also appeared in Quentin Tarantinoโs Once Upon a Time in Hollywoodย and Wes Andersonโs Asteroid City. In 2024, she also voiced Anxiety in Pixar’s Inside Out 2, opposite Amy Poehler. You can catch Hawke starring in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which hits cinemas on November 20th.
