New Star Trek Film Writers Share Update on “New Continuity”
Star Trek fans will be happy to hear that a clear path is now set for the next film in the sci-fi media franchise, which began in 1966 with Star Trek (The Original Series). The last feature release in the franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and owned by Paramount, was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, directed by Justin Lin and serving as the third instalment in the reboot/Kelvin timeline after 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, both directed by J.J. Abrams.
A fourth film in the reboot timeline was initially pitched yet experienced several cancellations and attached names including S.J. Clarkson, Mark L. Smith, Noah Hawley, Matt Shakman, Josh Friedman and even Quentin Tarantino.
A decade on from the last theatrical Star Trek film’s release, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are now attached to a new sci-fi project for the franchise, set to be a “completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.”
The pair had previously explained at this year’s Comic Con that they “….don’t want to rely on fandom,” and also “don’t want to just hope that there are enough fans of the original [TOS] or The Next Generation or whatever who will turn out for this.”
Instead, the writers are aiming to “just make a great movie that lives in the world that people are familiar with — some people are familiar with — and that others will discover,” hoping that “….with good fortune,” they can “launch a new franchise into existence.”

A sit-down with The Playlist’s The Discourse has seen the duo expand on their plan for the upcoming Star Trek installment, with Goldstein addressing how they are “…less focused on, like, what continuity [they’re] in, which timeline.”
“It’s more about how do we bring this franchise to audiences that don’t necessarily consider themselves Trekkies?” he explained. “What can we do that hasn’t been done before?”
“Our approach is to really look at it from a question of, what is this institution of Starfleet that’s at the heart of Star Trek? And what would happen if all is not well in that institution?” the writer added. “The movie that we talk about as the comp is Training Day.”
Daley then additionally mentioned “Crimson Tide“, adding that “Those are the two that we sort of used as our spiritual benchmarks.”
Goldstein and Daley’s additional credits include Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Game Night, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Horrible Bosses.
No further cast or crew details for the film have been announced.
