Keanu as John Wick in John Wick 3

Keanu Reeves has officially closed a deal to return as John Wick in an upcoming animated prequel about the iconic character.

The project was first announced in 2025, with Lionsgate‘s motion picture chair Adam Fogelson saying at the time, “In both animation and the world of โ€˜John Wick,โ€™ the possibilities are endless. And there is no โ€˜John Wickโ€™ story fans are clamouring for more than the โ€˜Impossible Task. Shannonโ€™s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.โ€

He is referring to Shannon Tindle (Kubo and the Two Strings), who will direct the film from a script by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. The producing team of Thunder Roadโ€™s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainmentโ€™s Chad Stahelski, will produce alongside Reeves, and they will be joined by Point Grey for the animated film.

John Wick is widely regarded as one of the best action franchises out there, and definitely one of the most successful. It’s grossed over $1 billion at the global box office across five movies, including theย spinoff Ballerina (which starred Ana de Armas). With that success in mind, Lionsgate was always likely to try to expand the series going forward, even if it appears it might not be likely at the end of the last film. There is currently a fifth live-action film in development (with Reeves also returning for this project), as well as a prequel based on Donnie Yenโ€™s blind assassin Caine.
