Paramount To Reboot Star Trek Officially Ending The Abrams Era
It has been confirmed, in a new feature piece by Variety, that Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison is looking to overhaul many of their upcoming projects, including a fresh take on Star Trek, thereby bringing the J.J. Abrams era to an end.
Though the idea of bringing back the cast of the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ for a fourth outing has been floating around for nearly a decade now, the project has remained in development with no further progress being made.
This news comes after Paramount Pictures decided to de-prioritise certain projects in an attempt to bring new focus to others and up the general pace of releases, with Star Trek being one they intended to reinvigorate. This decision was then reinforced by Ellison’s comments at a recent press conference, where he stated they wanted to take ‘a holistic approach’ to the franchise across film and television, leaning towards something that is more integrated.
The announcement will definitely disappoint fans of the reboot trilogy, especially as the likes of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto have all voiced their interest in returning to their respective characters.
Since the release of 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, many attempts have been made to revive the franchise on the big screen with the cast from the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ in mind. These ideas have involved the likes of Matt Shakman, S.J. Clarkson and even Quentin Tarantino. The most recent project that showed any promise was a proposed origin film, which was slated for 2026 with Toby Haynes to direct, but there have been no updates on this film for some time, despite lots of rumours.
