Jennifer Lawrence says ‘Miss Piggy Movie in Development’

Miss Piggy

Whilst appearing on the Las Culturistas podcast (with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers) this week, Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she is in the process of developing a Miss Piggy film with fellow megastar Emma Stone. The project would be the characters’ first solo outing since they first debuted on The Muppet Show in 1976, and will be written by Cole Escola, known for being behind the Broadway sensation Oh, Mary!

On the show, she revealed, โ€œI donโ€™t know if I can announce this, but Iโ€™m just going to…Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it”. When quizzed further about whether she and Stone will appear in the movie, Lawrence said, โ€œI think so, we have to”.ย  At this stage, there are no further details about what the film would be about, with Deadline looking for additional comments from Disney and Jim Henson Co. receiving no response.

For those who don’t know, Miss Piggy was originally a background character on The Muppet Show in the mid-1970s before gradually becoming a bigger part of the series as it went on. She then went on to become a pop culture icon in the late โ€™70s and early โ€™80s alongside Kermit the Frog. Since then, they have featured in numerous cult feature films and TV series, as well as having a ride at the Disney Parks (until recently). They have recently celebrated their 70th birthday on our screens and have had a year of celebrations leading up to the huge news last month that The Muppet Show is getting a reboot from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as part of a Disney+ TV event featuring special guest star Sabrina Carpenter.

It is set to premiere in 2026 and is rumoured to be a backdoor pilot for any future projects involving The Muppets on screen. The special will be written by Albertina Rizzo and directed by Alex Timbers. With the two also serving as executive producers alongside Carpenter, as well as Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee for Point Grey Pictures; David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, and Michael Steinbach for The Muppets Studio; and Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson.
