Henry Cavill Injury Delays Highlander Reboot
Henry Cavill has suffered an injury while prepping for MGM Studios’ United Artists Highlander. It’s likely that the reboot, directed by Chad Stahelski, will be delayed until early next year. Details of the injury are yet to be revealed.
The film boasts a star-studded cast alongside Cavill: the former Man of Steel will share the screen with Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista and Maz Zhang. No word yet if the delay will have any impact on the cast just yet.
Stahelski will take on production credits under his 87Eleven Entertainment banner. Production credits will also go to UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, Neal H. Moritz, Josh Davis and Louise Rosner.
Although kick-started by Lionsgate, UA later secured full rights to the Highlander IP, potentially planning a new series beyond the upcoming film.
The original film was released in 1986 and starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is, in fact, an immortal warrior. He is helped on his journey by a famous swordsman named Ramirez, played by Oscar-winning actor Sean Connery and portrays the climax of an ancient battle between immortal warriors, unfolding through interwoven past and present-day storylines.
Its tagline, “there can be only one”, and its ace soundtrack from Queen helped give it its cult status, as the film was not a huge box office success. A much-maligned sequel arrived in 1991, whilst a third film – minus Connery – came out in 1994. A TV series and two more sequels/continuations followed. Russell Mulcahy directed the first two films.
Time will tell if the reboot can capture fans like the original. But with Cavill in the lead and Stahelski at the helm, Highlander may well be in the most capable hands.
