Russell Crowe Reteams With Henry Cavill For Long-Mooted Highlander Remake
There can be only one Highlander – but now there are two.
Oscar Winner Russell Crowe is always a busy boy, and that shows no signs of slowing down with word that he is joining the long-mooted remake of Highlander by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists.
Crowe will reportedly play with role of Ramirez in the film, a role played by Sir Sean Connery in the original and its sequel.
Henry Cavill (The Witcher) has been attached to the film for a year or two now, and it seems the new version will finally make it before cameras later this year. John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski is helming the new film, which is set to be released next year.
Michael Finch has written the screenplay, and the film reportedly has a $100million budget. We just ask that they retain the Queen soundtrack from the original, or find a way to reinterpret it.
The film will mark a reunion for Cavill and Crowe, who starred together in 2013’s Man of Steel, which marked the former’s debut as Superman, with Crowe playing his father, Jor-El, in the Zack Snyder-directed, Christopher Nolan-produced reboot.
Highlander was released in 1986 and starred Christopher Lambert and Connery, and “portrays the climax of an ancient battle between immortal warriors, unfolding through interwoven past and present-day storylines.”
A much-maligned sequel arrived in 1991, whilst a third film – minus Connery – came out in 1994. A TV series and two more sequels/continuations followed. Russell Mulcahy directed the first two films.
Crowe, as busy as ever, will be seen later this year in Nuremberg, directed by James Vanderbilt and co-starring Rami Malek and Michael Shannon, before featuring in films such as Unabomย and Billionย Dollar Spy.ย
