Marisa Abela Joins Henry Cavill For Highlander Remake
Industry and Back to Black star Maria Abela has joined the cast of the upcoming – and long-gestating – remake of Highlander, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the stars of the acclaimed British drama, Abela was most recently seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, alongside Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett and Pierce Brosnan, and won a TV BAFTA earlier this year for the show’s third season.
She joins the already cast Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in the new version of the 80s cult classic. John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski is directing the film, which is being released by Amazon MGM and United Artists.
Abela is set to play a new character in the film, “an immortal who is a teacher of swordplay and one of MacLeod’s past loves.” Production is due to start this September with filming set for Scotland and Hong Kong, amongst others.
The original film was released in 1986 and starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is in in fact an immortal warrior. He is helped on his journey by a famous swordsman named Ramirez, played by Oscar-winning actor Sean Connery and “portrays the climax of an ancient battle between immortal warriors, unfolding through interwoven past and present-day storylines.”.
Its tagline “there can be only one”, and its ace soundtrack from Queen helped give it its cult status, as the film was not a huge box office success. A much-maligned sequel arrived in 1991, whilst a third film – minus Connery – came out in 1994. A TV series and two more sequels/continuations followed. Russell Mulcahy directed the first two films.
UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
No release date for Highlander has yet been set.
