Karen Gillan Joins Highlander Remake Alongside Henry Cavill

Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan is swapping space high-jinx and Infinity Stones for swords and sorcery as she has joined the ever-growing cast of the anticipated remake of Highlander. (via THR)

Henry Cavill (Argylle, Man of Steel) is leading the remake as Connor MacLeod, with the film already landing Russell Crowe (Unhinged), Marisa Abela (Back to Black) and Gillan’s fellow Guardian of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista. Gillan is set to play Heather, MacLeod’s mortal wife and the love of his life.

The fantasy actioner is coming from Amazon MGM’s United Artists, and is being directed by Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick franchise and The Fall Guy. It’s set to start filming at the end of next month (September) and is set for cinemas next year.

The original film was released in 1986 and starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is in in fact an immortal warrior. He is helped on his journey by a famous swordsman named Ramirez, played by Oscar-winning actor Sean Connery and “portrays the climax of an ancient battle between immortal warriors, unfolding through interwoven past and present-day storylines.”.

Its tagline, “there can be only one”, and its ace soundtrack from Queen helped give it its cult status, as the film was not a huge box office success. A much-maligned sequel arrived in 1991, whilst a third film – minus Connery – came out in 1994. A TV series and two more sequels/continuations followed. Russell Mulcahy directed the first two films.

Gillan is currently in UK cinemas in The Life of Chuck, the acclaimed take on the Stephen King novella from filmmaker Mike Flanagan and starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill and Jacob Tremblay.

No release date for Highlander has yet been set.
