Who doesn’t love a good scare? Horror films have existed — and thrived — for decades now, and for good reason, as The Guardian explains that being scared triggers our fight-or-flight responses. This tends to make experiences more vivid and exciting, and as we all know, there are few things in life that are as good as an adrenaline rush.

Now, one thing we’ve learned through the years is that not all the things that go bump in the night are actually scary, as is the case with these 5 surprisingly cute monsters in the movie world.

Gizmo from Gremlins

Steven Spielberg’s 1984 horror film Gremlins brought the world the most unlikely of surprises. While the titular gremlins are grotesque creatures straight out of your nightmares, this wasn’t always the case. See, gremlins only turn into monsters if you happen to feed them after midnight — but otherwise, they are tiny furry creatures that look like a mix between a monkey and a rabbit.

This is best exemplified by Gizmo, who serves as the pet of the main character in the film. Gizmo and the rest of the gremlins, in general, are based on the Mogwai creature in Chinese mythology, which multiplies during the rainy seasons.

The Monsters from Hotel Transylvania

Surely, you know how it feels to be burned out. Well, as it happens, monsters do too. Hotel Transylvania tells the story of Count Dracula, the owner of Hotel Transylvania, which functions as a getaway for monsters — but what do monsters even have to get away from? Humans, of course. These monsters on vacation are here to unwind, chill out, and enjoy the hotel’s human-free amenities.

In one scene, we even get to see the monsters play their very own version of bingo. And who can blame them? Foxy Bingo points out that while the game is exciting enough on its own, added features like progressive jackpots can make this well-loved activity even more exciting, as there are higher stakes and thrilling calls. It’s a nice glimpse into the lives of otherworldly creatures when they’re not terrorising us mortals — we’re not so different, after all. Moreover, the characters in this eponymous hotel add their own twist to the game, with one of the creatures even eating the winning bingo card owned by one of the other players! Being a monster, we suppose, does have its perks.

Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon

The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy has taught us a lot about our preconceived notions of the world and our place in it. There’s no better example of this than the adorable Toothless, the Night Fury. The first film describes Night Furies as the most ruthless of all dragons, but throughout the films we realise that they’re actually much closer to dogs — well, dogs that can fly, at least. And like dogs, they’re just the cutest.

The Trolls from The Boxtrolls

From the same production studio that brought the world stop-motion masterpieces Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, Laika’s The Boxtrolls introduces the cutest and most endearing group of trolls you’ll ever meet. Set in the Victorian era, The Boxtrolls is about a community of subterranean trolls that scavenge for trash in the overworld. Things get more interesting as they happen to stumble upon a boy, whom they then raise as their own. Think The Jungle Book, but with trolls and lots of rubbish

Son of Godzilla from Kaijûtô no kessen: Gojira no musuko

The Godzilla franchise has spawned an impressive 36 films over the course of half a century. The franchise started with 1956’s Godzilla and runs all the way to 2019’s Godzilla: King of Monsters, and with an upcoming King Kong spinoff in the works, the franchise is showing no signs of slowing down. But back in 1967, Godzilla apparently had decided to settle down and raise a a family. This film is cute on so many levels as it even includes a scene where Dadzilla plays with his Sonzilla by using his tail as a makeshift jump rope, which just goes to show that parenting does, indeed, change you.
