Phil Lord and Chris Miller Discuss Spider-Verse 3 In IMAX
The creators of Spider-Verse talk about giving fans the most immersive trilogy closer.
Spider-Man fans are may about to be curbed with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and hitting theatres this month, however, the third installment in the critically acclaimed animated Spider-Verse film series is another Spidey adventure they cannot wait to sink their teeth into.
Acclaimed filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller hold writing and production credits on the series and have recently discussed the threequel’s development and their attitude towards the anticipated feature, especially its IMAX format.
Miller eagerly shared how the directing duo “are deep, deep in it.”
“We’re actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale,” the filmmaker added. “And make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous.”
Miller also assured that he and his partner are “chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it’s coming together really well.”
Citing the third installment to the animated comic film series as a “lot of movie, and a lot to do”, the Project Hail Mary directors emphasised how “You got to keep doing something that hasn’t been done before. That’s all you got to do. Easy!”
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the follow-up to 2018’s hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed by filmmaking trio Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, and 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this time led by trio Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson.
Under Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, the series charts the epic adventures of Miles Morales, a young New Yorker who lands himself the role as Spider-Man and finds his heroic actions merging with the Spider-Man from countless parallel universes. It features the voice work of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Mahershala Ali, Oscar Isaac, Nicolas Cage and many more.
The third film is set to expand upon Miles’ circumstances in a darker alternate world where there is no Spider-Man and crime has taken over.
Adding on, Lord stated the attention and care the duo are putting into the third film as “Details matter. The thing that’s a joy about those pictures is that everyone on the crew is so good at what they do.”
“So you just sit around, marvel at all these brilliant artists, and then we get to work with these great filmmakers, sit in a room all day, and just try to make everything incrementally better together,” Lord added. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for a June 4th, 2027, release.
