David Lowery To Direct The Fisherman Adaptation
It’s been confirmed that The Green Knight director David Lowery is set to lead a film adaptation of John Langan’s horror novel 2016 The Fisherman, with Alex Ross Perry co-writing the script with Lowery.
Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Alex Ginno will share production credits with Gary Dauberman and Mia Maniscalco. Focus Features has also picked up the adaptation, which is yet to receive a release date.
The Fisherman’s synopsis follows two widowers called, Abe and Dan, as they travel to New York for fishing trips to curb their grief. A secluded area known as Dutchman’s Creek catches Dan’s eye, mostly due to claims that it provides visitors the chance to reunite with their deceased loved ones, and so the duo head there despite warnings. Upon arrival, the trip takes a darker feel, and Abe and Dan come face to face with Der ‘The Fisherman’ Fisher.
Dancing between folk and cosmic horror, Langan’s prose was awarded for Best Novel as part the Bram Stoker Award upon publishing.
Lowery’s additional filmmaking credits include his 2005 debut, Deadroom, and the Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara-led Western romance, Ain’t Them Body Saints, from 2013. He also directed the 2016 remake of Disney’s Pete Dragon, the revamp of the original 1977 film of the same title, and most famously, his 2017 paranormal drama, A Ghost Story, starring Affleck and Mara in an emotionally charged supernatural tale of a couple separated when one enters the spirit realm.
The filmmaker has recently released Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.
Meanwhile, author Langan has previously written 2009’s House of Widows and the anthology, Creatures: Thirty Years of Monsters, with Paul G. Tremblay. The author holds a total of 12 award nominations, winning two.
