Tom Holland Shares Desire to “Try And Do Fred Astaire Proud”
The MCU star shares goal for biopic on dance and screen icon
Revealed back in 2021, Tom Holland is set to star in an upcoming Fred Astaire biopic, a Sony Picture’s film directed by Paul King (known for Paddington and Wonka) This film is set for production in early 2027, meaning rehearsal and construction is quickly entering the foreground of Holland’s career commitments.
Currently, Holland has been crossing continents working to promote two blockbusters takes a centre role in – The Odyssey where he takes the role of Telemicus and of course the next installment of his Marvel franchise with Spider-Man: Brand New Day Though his summer sees these to take priority, he is ready to start rehearsals and take on a whole new role.
Astaire was an icon of Hollywood, often dubbed one of the greatest dancers of all time. He had unimaginable influence over that era of movie musicals as a dancer, singer and actor with a dedication to accuracy and performance. This biopic will follow his early life and rise to fame, beginning alongside his sister Adele before he split to take to on screen performance as a solo act.
A recent update from Holland shared that he was feeling “absolute dread” about the training to come to match the great Astaire. On Good Morning America, he explained “For me, what I love about my job is the challenges,” and his plans to increase his focus –“We have Fred Astaire next, is what we’re planning on doing. And as soon as I finish with these tours, I’m diving back into the dance studio“.
“I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud,” added Holland, highlighting a pleasant sense of dedication to a new role in honour of the star.

Most interestingly, Holland has committed himself to a pretty hefty goal – wanting to challenge a number of his skills and discipline as he straps on his dancing shoes. He has told that he has “a desire to use no doubles, to do all of the dancing, to shoot those dances in one shot – how [Astaire] would have done it.” This will add a huge level of work ethic and authenticity to the role, hopefully bringing an ambitious yet thrilling biopic to the screen.
This role comes almost 20 years after Holland begun his career starring in the title role of Billy Elliot: The Musical – meaning we can see him digging back to his roots and recalling the power of body language and performance.
