Tom Holland says Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have “more humour” than previously planned, along with an expanded “villain plotline” after additional photography for the upcoming film.

“I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need,” Holland says in a new interview with GQ. “The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humour. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff.”

The latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise takes place four years after the events of No Way Home, with Peter Parker living alone as an adult after erasing himself from everyone’s memories and becoming Spider-Man full-time as new threats rise.

Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned), Sadie SinkJon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher), Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando (Mac Gargan/Scorpion), and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk) also star. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) directs the film.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t the only blockbuster Tom Holland stars in this summer. We’ll also see him on screen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic that Holland says is “unlike anything” he’s ever seen before.

“I think fans are going to be really, really blown away by the set pieces and sequences throughout the movie,” Holland says in the GQ interview, “because even as someone that was there on the day and was in the film, I was absolutely blown away by the scale, the scope, his [Nolan’s] ability to navigate such an intricate and heartfelt story in the middle of this insane kind of action movie.”

In the highly anticipated film, Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the cunning king of Ithaca who faces a dangerous journey back home after the Trojan War. Holland stars as Telemachus, Odysseus’s determined son searching for his long-lost father.

Holland also shares words of praise for his co-star, saying, “He was a leader. This was a very tough movie, and no one worked harder than Matt did. And he always came to set with a smile on his face, and he was gracious, and he was so kind to the crew. And I think he really set the tone for everyone as to how we were going to collectively make this film.”

The Odyssey, which also stars Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya, releases July 17th.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into cinemas two weeks later on July 31st.
