Tom Cruise is a man on a mission in the first Digger teaser
Warner Bros UK has released the first look at the highly anticipated collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu. The title of their mysterious project has been revealed as Digger and the teaser reveals… not very much.
However, it certainly lives up to its title: a silhouetted Cruise in what may or may not be old man make-up, wielding a shovel to the sound of Gorillaz’ ‘O Green World’, and preparing to break through the ground of what looks like a house. We then cut to Cruise’s character, replete with big boots, pirouetting along the side of what seems to be a boardwalk with shovel in hand.
Confusing? Arresting? Enticing? It’s all three. Check out the trailer below.
The film is purported to be a satirical disaster movie, and one assumes it will riff on Cruise’s status as an action movie icon. The film’s subtitle, ‘A Comedy of Catastrophic Proportions’, seems to bear this out.
Cruise’s new deal with Warner Bros will ‘develop and produce original and franchise films’. Digger is the first stage in which Variety cites as a “strategic partnership”.
One senses that Cruise is anticipating the post-Mission: Impossible stage of his career, which may return him to the kind of angular, acclaimed performances seen in the likes of Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia and Collateral.
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu is renowned for his philosophically weighty and emotionally bruising human epics like Amores Perros and Babel, not to mention the Oscar-winning likes of Birdman and The Revenant. The forthcoming collaboration between noted arthouse auteur and the biggest star in Hollywood surely promises fireworks.
Co-starring Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman and Pip Torrens, Digger is poised for UK release in 2026.
