Netflix to adapt Taylor Swift and Barack Obama favourite The God of the Woods
When a book counts the world’s biggest pop star (arguably) and a former U.S. President among its fans, it’s worth taking notice. Liz Moore‘sย The God of the Woods has sold over a million copies worldwide and tells the story of the wealthy and exploitative Van Laar family who build a seemingly benevolent children’s summer camp on a parcel of land.
However, when 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar disappears from said summer camp, it kick-starts a riveting investigation into the heart of darkness. Little wonder that Taylor Swift and Barack Obama count themselves among the novel’s devotees: Obama listed it as one of his favourite books of the year and Swift was seen listening to the audiobook version in her recent documentary,ย The End of an Era.
Good news for fans of the book:ย The God of the Woodsย is now being adapted by Netflix, reports Variety. Moore is attached as co-showrunner, writer and executive producer alongside Liz Hannah, the Golden Globe-winning co-writer of Steven Spielberg‘s The Post.
The project is being overseen by Sony Pictures Television and Original Film with Neal H. Moritz (the Fast and Furious franchise) and Pavun Shetty producing. Moore and Hannah said in a joint statement: “We love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix. We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have.”
Sony Pictures Television and Original Film have already adapted Moore’s Long Bright Riverย to acclaimed effect on Peacock. No casting details have been revealed yet, nor is there a release date, so keep your eyes peeled.
