Netflix has released the trailer for its new Pride and Prejudice adaptation, starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden.

The six-episode series was written for the screen by Dolly Alderton and is adapted from the beloved Jane Austen novel. “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton shares. “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. The book is a gift to adapt – packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I’m so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book – and those who are yet to meet their Lizzy and Mr Darcy.”

Alongside Corrin and Lowden, the series boasts an all-star cast including Olivia Colman, Rufus Sewell, Freya Mavor, Rhea Norwood, Hopey Parish, Hollie Avery, Jamie Demetriou, Daryl McCormack, Louis Partridge, Siena Kelly, Fiona Shaw, Sebastian Armesto, Rosie Cavaliero, Saffron Coomber, James Dryden, Justin Edwards, James Northcote, Eloise Webb and Isabella Sermon.

Both the leads have complimented the faithful adaptation of the novel, with Corrin crediting Alderton’s script with balancing the novel’s period setting with its modern relevance. “I don’t think we’ve had an adaptation that does the modernity and the authenticity that we love. Some of the actual social commentary that comes out is really brilliant.” With Lowden adding, “It’s so joyous and beautiful and romantic. In a world where that takes a back seat, you need any excuse to get joy and romanticism. This is one of the greatest pieces of that kind of work there’s ever been.”

The series follows the five Bennett sisters who must navigate love, family, and society’s expectations to secure their futures when wealthy bachelors arrive in their neighbourhood; Jane falls for the charming Mr Bingley, while Elizabeth clashes with Bingley’s proud friend Mr Darcy. Unexpected encounters and family scandals force Elizabeth to reconsider her feelings and discover the true nature of love.

Pride and Prejudice debuts on Netflix on the 3rd December.
