The Odyssey First Reactions Hail Christopher Nolan’s “Must-See” Epic
The journey home has officially begun, and Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is already making waves.
Following its world premiere in London this week, the first reactions to the filmmaker’s epic adaptation of Homer’s classic poem have begun pouring in – and they’re overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising its ambitious scope, powerful performances and breathtaking IMAX presentation.
The story stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek hero whose perilous journey home after the Trojan War sees him face mythical creatures, vengeful gods and seemingly impossible trials. The star-studded ensemble also includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson.
Here’s what the critics are saying:
David Ehrlich, INDIEWIRE: “A surprisingly natural (and less despairing) Oppenheimer follow-up about a man haunted by defying the gods & dooming civilisation.”
Jazz Tangcay, VARIETY hailed the movie as an “astonishing achievement” and a “triumphant, spectacular epic,”
Nick de Semlyen, EMPIRE: “This is rich, propulsive, deeply emotional filmmaking.”
Phil de Semlyen, TIME OUT: “Believe the hype(rbole): it is that film. Dense but accessible, packed with career-best work from the stacked cast. It’s a dizzying mix of craft and spectacle that’s built to last.”
Erik Davis, FANDANGO & ROTTEN TOMATOES: “It is an absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great filmmakers of our time.”
Matt Neglia, NEXT BEST PICTURE: “Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of THE ODYSSEY is as epic as movies get with some of the most breathtaking set pieces he’s ever attempted. A colossal achievement of scale, even by Nolan’s standards.”
Jacob Stolworthy, THE INDEPENDENT: “Nolan’s biggest film to date. [He] showcases visual trickery in a way you’ve never seen before.”
The Odyssey hits cinemas on July 17th.
