The Hunt For Gollum: Gandalf and Frodo Confirmed ‘To Return’

Ian McKellan and Elijah Wood set for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Sir Ian McKellen may have revealed secrets about the upcoming feature The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum over the weekend by teasing casting details whilst he was on stage at a fan event in London. (via EW)

The beloved actor was on stage with his Fellowship comrades (Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan) when he cheekily revealed that the characters of Gandalf and Frodo will feature in the upcoming Andy Serkis-directed film, as well as when he believes cameras are due to start filming. He can be seen telling the For The Love Of Fantasy event in a video saying, โ€œI hear thereโ€™s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and itโ€™s going to start filming in May. Itโ€™s going to be directed by Gollum, and itโ€™s all about Gollumโ€.ย

McKellen was careful not to say whether he and Elijah Wood would reprise their roles as Gandalf or Frodo, with neither actor officially confirmed to appear in the film. Instead, McKellen revealed: โ€œIโ€™ll tell you two secrets about the casting: Thereโ€™s a character in the movie called Frodo, and thereโ€™s a character in the movie called Gandalf”.

This is still exciting news for Lord Of The Rings fans, especially McKellen previously expressing hope at getting to return to the role.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the team behind Theย Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, are due to reunite to produce the two upcoming films from J.R.R. Tolkienโ€™s Middle-earth for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. They will be joined by Zane Weiner. Walsh and Boyens will also be writing the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumย is currently due to be released on the 17th December 2027.
