Stephen Soderbergh to help finish ‘The Batman Part II’

The Batman Part II director recently announced that he would take a step away from production of The Batman Part II due to ongoing family matters.

The long-awaited sequel to 2022’s The Batman has seen numerous delays as Matt Reeves worked on the script and schedules aligned.

Principal photography had begun on The Batman Part II. Stephen Soderbergh will now step into the director’s chair to help finish the work Reeves had started.

Soderbergh, director of the Ocean’s trilogy, Erin Brockovich and Black Bag, is a long-time admirer of Reeves’ work. They will now work together to complete the final picture and help stop any further delays to the film’s release. It will currently release on February 18, 2028.

Soderbergh also released a statement following the news:

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

Warner Bros. also commented on the situation:

“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film.”

Matt Reeves has also release a statement via his X account @mattreevesLA:

“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes. 🦇”

When it does release, Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farell are all set to return. New additions to the cast include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Bryan Tyree Henry.
