Spider-Man: Brand New Day Success Prompts Sony Sequel Deal With Destin Daniel Cretton
Marvel’s 38th feature, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, took no time in becoming one of, if not the, standout mainstream releases of 2026. A follow-up to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in his seventh on-screen appearance as the Friendly Neighbourhood comic hero, and is directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. Narrating Parker’s life after having to let go of his nearest and dearest and deal with his spidey-powers evolving and a new threat, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo.
The fourth installment in the MCU’s Spider-Man world has landed its director on a promising new path, thanks to a smashing global box office total of over $2.452 billion, from US sales of $946 million and international ones amounting to $1.534 billion, marking it as 2026’s highest-grossing release behind Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Additionally, an opening weekend total of $360 million placed Cretton’s film as the largest domestic opening weekend of all time. The fourth MCU Spidey flick is also the second-fastest film ever to reach the milestone of $2 billion, having smashed the target in less than 20 days. Topping off Brand New Day’s box office milestones is taking the gold spot as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time, in addition to the third-highest-grossing film worldwide.

Such success has landed its director in a new deal with Sony, one that involves Cretton developing future titles under Hisako Films, his production company, with the company’s president, Jeyun Munford, lending a hand. Despite no directing being specified in the contract, it has been confirmed that Sony is itching to get Cretton back in the director’s chair for the sequel to Brand New Day, with a potential space-based story being teased in the film’s credits scene.
“Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense and a marvellous storyteller who is a master at understanding the cinematic experience,” Sony Pictures’ motion picture group president, Sanford Panitch, revealed in a statement. “We at Sony are proud to be making a future together and expanding our relationship with Destin, Jeyun and Hisako Films.”
Tom Rothman, motion picture group CEO and chairman, also shared, “Destin is the real deal and we are lucky as hell to be in ongoing business with him and his team. Po’okela!”
The filmmaker added that he “had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch and their team,” and cannot wait to get started on a new era of creating “more meaningful stories that people can experience in theaters around the world.”
Cretton’s next work will be a live-action adaptation of the smash hit manga series, Naruto, for Lionsgate; a project which has been approved by the manga’s creator, Masashi Kishimoto. The author revealed he heard the news “…after watching a blockbuster action film of [Cretton’s]” and immediately “thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto.”
“After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naruto,” Kishimoto added. “In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.”
