The summer blockbuster period has resulted in some major turning points in the highest-grossing 2026 release chart, with Brand New Day, the latest Spider-Man flick racking in some major box office success during its opening weekend.

Destin Daniel Cretton’s Marvel feature Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sky rocketed to the top spot thanks to a global gross of $927 million as its box office debut. The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man as he battles losing those closest to him to protect his identity, as well as taking on NYC’s crime and a new growing threat.

Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo additionally star in the MCU’s 39th installment.

The fourth installment in the MCU Spider-Man series saw domestic ticket sales of $355 million combine with international ones of $572 million, with its American sales landing it as box office history’s second-biggest debut after Marvel’s 2019 film, Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million domestic opening weekend gross. It has also outgrossed it’s initial budget of $225 million by $702 million.

These numbers place Cretton’s film as the fourth highest-grossing film of 2026. It comes ahead of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has grossed $911 million globally from a domestic gross of $355 million and an international one of $572 million, and behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the previous highest-grossing 2026 release before Toy Story 5 took over, which has a global gross of $1.011 billion from a domestic gross of $429 million and an international one of $581 million.

Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is 2026’s top spot holder with domestic sales of $461 million coming together with international ones of $604 million to make a global gross of $1.065 billion.

Additionally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day means Marvel Studios is now responsible for four of the largest global box office openings, joining Avengers: Endgame with $1.22 billion, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War $640 million, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home $600 million. It takes the second spot in the list.

Meanwhile, Nolan’s take on the Greek epic by Homer also held its own with an additional $51 million in domestic sales this weekend. โ€œThe combination of Spider-Man and The Odysseyโ€” a legacy superhero sequel and a big original production โ€” is taking the box office to new highs by a comfortable margin,โ€ David A. Gross,ย who is in charge of FranchiseRe’s box office newsletter, stated.ย โ€œThese are stunning numbers.โ€
