Sebastian Stan teases Avengers : Doomsday to be "heartbreaking"

A countdown is on for December 16th, with Avengers: Doomsday coming into UK cinemas to bring what should be an explosive end to the new releases of 2026. Marvel fans speculate for what is to come, with the trailer giving little away and encouraging anticiaption for a potentially devastating plot twist.

Sebastian Stan, reprising his role as Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier, is preparing the public for the worst, teasing that the film will be “heartbreaking”. This recent interview has increased discourse over whether a character will die.

“I haven’t seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out,” Stan told Decider. “I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We’ll see who makes it to the next level.”

He is already looking back upon the experience fondly, noting how filming Avengers: Doomsday gave him a chance to reconnect with his co-stars and fall back into familiarity.

He commented that he “got a chance to reunite with everyone,” including Chris Evans, adding, “It was very nostalgic to look back, and think about all of these years that we’ve known each other, and grew up together. It’s incredible in that way. It’s been a family and it never stops being that way.”

Avengers: Doomsday was first announced in July 2024, with the reveal of Robert Downey Jr as Dr. Doom and the Russo brothers returning to direct. This is marvels most ambitious gamble yet, with a production budget of $700 million and advertising budget of $300 million – meaning they will need to make around $1.5 billion to break even. Therefore, there is a lot riding on a very successful opening, but pre-sale numbers are already looking promising.

It will feature the largest names in Marvel’s brand, with different universes colliding – including the Avengers, the Wakandans , the Thunderbolts from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, and the original X-Men.

With around two months to go, Stan’s comment has only heightened excitement for this hopefully epic new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
