Box Office Report: Avengers Endgame Encore Tops Primetime

The re-release of Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2019 superhero sequel Avengers: Endgame, the 22nd MCU installment and follow-up to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, has seen overwhelming box office success this weekend, adding to its initial global gross of $2.8 billion. Starring a mammoth cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin, Avengers: Endgame Encore narrates the superhero team’s comeback against titan Thanos after he wipes out half of humanity using the Infinity Gauntlet.

The film’s re-release has garnered a global total of $86 million in ticket sales, gathered from $26 million in US sales and $60 million overseas. Combined with the original $2.8 billion, $858.4 million in the States and $1.941 billion internationally, the film’s total box office gross is now $2.89 billion, split between the US ($885 million) and international territories ($2 billion). 

FranchiseRe’s David A. Gross has shared how “Re-releases rarely earn more than $10 million.”

Avengers: Endgame’s previous box office numbers ranked it as the third highest-grossing release in the US and Canada, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $951 million and Star Wars: Episode VII-The Force Awakens‘ $936.7 million. It was also the highest-grossing film of all time upon release until a re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar in China surpassed it by $5 million and knocked it to second place; when adjusted for inflation, it ranks fifth, between 1977’s Star Wars and 1965’s The Sound of Music.

Goss also cites how “As a marketing exercise, [the re-release’s box office success and assistance with record breaks] is an effective way to build early word-of-mouth.”

The sequel to Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday, is looking to clear out 2026’s box office and potentially top the current highest-grossing film of the year, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which currently stands at $2.496 billion globally from US sales of $951 million and international sales of $1.545 billion, meaning the Russo Brothers’ sequel will have thirteen days to top these numbers.

Additional box office news sees Lance Oppenheim’s fictional feature debut, Primetime, a biographical drama focused on To Catch A Predator host Chris Hansen in his days of taking down child predators through sting house operations using the TV show, also see success. Starring Robert Pattinson as Hansen in his third onscreen appearance of 2026, Oppenheim’s psychological drama has been cited by Goss as “an outstanding opening for an original crime drama”  thanks to a box office tally of $19.2 million in the US.

This number marks Primetime as A24’s third-biggest opening, coming in second behind Kane Parsons‘ feature debut Backrooms ($81.4 million), and Alex Garland’s political work Civil War ($25.5 million), and ahead of Josh Safdie’s sports drama Marty ($15.7 million)

“Robert Pattinson has built an impressive filmography,” Goss added. “The actor is a bona fide star, and he’s carrying this movie.”

Primetime hits UK cinemas 30th October.
