Screen Actors Guild award winners
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, what many see as the biggest indicator as to where the Oscars will go next month, were held in Los Angeles last night. The SAG awards is the only ceremony where performers are exclusively awarded, and seeing as their fellow peers are the voters, it is seen as a highly respected honor to receive one.
Receiving the honor last night was Eddie Redmayne, who won Best Male Performance for his portrayal as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, beating rivals Benedict Cumberbatch, Steve Carell, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Michael Keaton. This is now causing some pundits to proclaim that Redmayne is the favourite to win the Oscar come February 22nd, after he also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor.
Birdman is also now hotly tipped as the Best Picture favourite, after it received not only the award for Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAGs, but also the Best Film at the Producers Guild Awards the previous night. The last seven films to win the award at the PGAs have gone on to win the Best Picture Academy Award.
There were few surprises elsewhere, with Julianne Moore picking up Best Actress for her performance as an Alzheimer’s sufferer in Still Alice, and J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette winning Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively. All three actors are Oscar nominated, and have been favourites since before the announcements to go home with the awards.
In terms of television, Netflix continues to show its power, with its original programmes House of Cards and Orange is The New Black both picking up awards. Kevin Spacey followed up his Golden Globe success by picking up the Best Actor in a Drama Series award, and Uzo Aduba won the Best Actress in a Comedy Series award, with Orange is the New Black also going home with the Best Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Series award.
