New Details Emerge Unusual Deal for Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial
Fresh details have emerged surrounding Neon’s acquisition of Luca Guadagnino‘s upcoming drama Artificial, revealing just how unconventional the distributor’s deal to rescue the film may have been.
According to new reports, multiple distributors passed on the project after Amazon MGM Studios dropped the completed film last month, leaving Artificial without a distributor despite its reported $40 million production budget. Neon ultimately stepped in, securing the rights ahead of a planned awards season release.
The most striking revelation concerns the financial structure of the agreement. Reports suggest Neon acquired the film under a “no-money guarantee” arrangement, meaning the independent distributor did not pay an upfront licensing fee for the rights. Instead, Neon is expected to cover the film’s marketing and distribution costs, which could total around $20 million. However, another source familiar with the negotiations has disputed claims that no money changed hands, although no alternative figure has been disclosed.
Artificial stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and explores the power struggles, personal rivalries and ethical tensions surrounding the AI company, focusing on the tumultuous period when Altman was briefly removed as CEO before being reinstated. The ensemble cast also includes Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Mark Rylance, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd and Billie Lourd.
The report also sheds light on the film itself, with insiders describing Artificial as a sharp satire of Silicon Valley culture. While one executive reportedly questioned its commercial theatrical appeal, they praised the film’s quality. The production is also said to have undergone extensive reshoots and evolved into a considerably darker film than originally scripted.
With post-production now nearing completion, Artificial is widely expected to premiere on the festival circuit before Neon’s Oscar-qualifying theatrical release later this year.
