Jon Favreau Talks Cancelled The Mandalorian Fourth Season

The director and creator of the series talks the unmade fourth entry...

The Mandalorian and Grogu - Star Wars

Actor and director Jon Favreau has shed some insight into the dropped fourth season of his hit Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, a three-season sci-fi showย set in theย Star Wars franchise, which centres on a bounty hunter who finds companionship with a Force-sensitive babyย and protects him from imperial threats. The show was the franchise’s first live-action series, taking place five years after Return of the Jedi, and will now receive a spin-off feature film titled Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.ย

The Mandalorian’sย third season debuted in 2023, and a fourth was originally planned for development. However, the film spin-off seemingly took over priority.ย GamesRadar shares an interview with SFX Magazine in which the filmmaker discusses the dropped fourth season, which would have linked toย another Star Wars series.

โ€œIt would have heavily linked to Ahsoka Season 2. You canโ€™t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” Favreau explained.

“There were a lot of characters; it assumed youโ€™d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline.”

Favreau also took some time to acknowledge how the transition of Mando and Grogu’s story is now in “….a completely different medium,” as the beloved characters hit the big screen.

So I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorianโ€™s apprentice,” the director added. “As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, youโ€™ll know these characters well, even if youโ€™ve never seen the show.”

But thereโ€™s still a lot of Star Wars in there,” he concluded. “Youโ€™re going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesnโ€™t diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film.โ€

The film will star Pedro Pascal, reprising his role from the show, Jeremy Allen Whiteย andย Sigourney Weaver. Its premise will focus on the Mandalorian Djarin and Grogu being tasked with rescuing Rotta the Hut after being enlisted by the New Republic.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Groguย hits cinemas on May 22nd.
