Girls Like Girls Trailer Brings Hayley Kiyoko’s Story Full Circle

2 women lie side by side in Girls Like Girls

What began as a hit single and best-selling novel has now become a feature adaptation, revealed in the first full trailer for Hayley Kiyoko’s coming-of-age romance Girls Like Girls.

Focus Features have released the first full trailer for Kiyoko’s directorial debut, expanding her story into a full-length film that explores love, acceptance and honesty. Starring Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy, the film traces a summer spent in a new town, as two girls navigate unfamiliar surroundings, growing closer as their friendship gently evolves into something more.

The screenplay comes from Kiyoko and Stephanie Scott, whose collaboration dates back to the 2015 music video for the pop hit that inspired the film. Bringing the story to the big screen is a producing team led by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Richard Alan Reid, Katie McNicol and Dee Best.

With Girls Like Girls, Kiyoko brings her story full circle, transforming a song that resonated with millions into an intimate, heartfelt feature. The trailer promises a tender coming-of-age romance that adds to the growing landscape of queer cinema, honouring the original’s emotional honesty while allowing the story, and its audience, to grow up alongside it.

Synopsis | Based on Kiyoko’s breakthrough hit song and viral music video of the same name, the film tells the universal story of falling in love for the first time and learning to accept yourself along the way.
