Danny McBride To Direct G.I. Joe Adaptation

It’s been confirmed that Danny McBride will take on a new G.I. Joe movie for Paramount, with sources sharing that the Righteous Gemstones creator’s signing on has pushed the Hasbro toy adaptation into “high priority”.  This movie will follow the studio’s previous G.I. Joe cinematic re-tellings, including G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, G.I Joe: Retaliation and a Snake Eyes spin-off.

Plot details are yet to be revealed.

G.I Joe is the line of action figures and media franchise first created in 1963 by Stanley Weston and Donald Levine, with the figures being characterised as representing the four US Armed Forces branches: Action Soldier, Action Marine, Action Pilot and Action Sailor. The original toys consist of seven distinct collections released between 1963 and 2003, such as the original design, Hall of Fame, Masterpiece collection and an Anniversary collection, to name a few.

As for media adaptations, there currently stand four animated movies as part of the franchise: 1987’s G.I. Joe: The Movie, 2003’s Spy Troops, 2004’s Valor vs. Venom and 2004’s Ninja Battles, as well as the Paramount live-action releases. Also included in the franchise are 1983’s animated series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, a 1989 animated series of the same title, 1995’s G.I. Joe Extreme, 2005’s Sigma 6, 2009’s Resolute and 2010’s Renegades.

A series of video games and comic books completes the action military world.

The new movie will mark McBride’s feature directorial debut, with the comedian holding acting and writing credits on previous releases such as Superbad, Hot Rod, Despicable Me, Alien: Covenant, The Angry Birds Movie and David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy: Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

Paramount are also anticipating a new Paw Patrol film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, Street Fighter, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol and The Angry Birds Movie 3 for 2026 releases.
