Anne Hathaway Promises “Intention” To Make Third Princess Diaries
After The Devil Wears Prada 2, is Hathaway set for more royal adventures?
The Devil Wears Prada star Anna Hathaway has given fans an update on The Princess Diaries 3, the long-awaited third film in the Princess Diaries series. The first film was released by director Garry Marshall in 2001, based on the Meg Cabot book of the same name from 2000.
It featured the Academy-Award winning actress in her debut role as a teenager called Mia who discovers she is heir to ruling a European kingdom. It’s up to her long-long grandmother, played by Julie Andrews, to get her in shape for the role.
The Princess Diaries also starred Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and Robert Schwartzman. It grossed $165. 3 million against a $26 million budget, racking up praise in reviews towards Hathaway’s comedic performance and is now hailed as a 2000s chick flick classic.
A sequel followed the film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, in 2004 and focuses on Mia learning she must marry a prince or relinquish her throne. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement shared no relation to the original book’s sequel, The Princess Diaries, Volume II: Princess in the Spotlight, and grossed $135.3 million from its budget of $45 million. A third film was announced in late 2022, with Hathaway’s return to the role confirmed in October 2024.
Hathaway took some time during promoting her latest work, The Devil Wears Prada 2, to provide an update on the third film.
“We’re constantly working on it. [The Devil Wears Prada 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” the star shared with Entertainment Weekly. “[It] became impossible to focus on both at the same time.”
The Mother Mary actress stated her “intention is to make Princess Diaries 3“, places the project as her “hopefully next” one, yet she had to emphasise the sequel has not been “greenlit or confirmed yet.” Hathaway also shared that she and her team are currently “chipping away at the script,” as “everybody wants” a sequel.
The actress showcased awareness and ambition by sharing that “If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opens in cinemas on May 1st.
