It’s no easy task for parents trying to talk to their child about something even an adult would never want to see in their lifetime, sexual Assault. Mason Reeves is our titular 8 year old character with Tatum and Chan playing her parents trying their best to deal with her trauma.
Josephine has been making critical waves since it’s world premiere Sundance back in January winning 2 awards including the Grand Jury Prize. Our writer Katie Shaw watched the film recently at BFI London Film Festival, describing Beth de Araújo’s film as a “masterpiece in storytelling, anchored by Araujo’s writing and the astonishing performances which bring this delicate and difficult tale to life“.
Synopsis | Winner of the Grand Jury Prize Dramatic and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, Josephine is a gripping drama that doesn’t shy away from using aspects of genre filmmaking to tackle a story of deep emotional heft.
Writer-director Beth de Araújo’s sophomore feature is a deeply personal story, rooted in the filmmaker’s own childhood experience of interrupting a sexual assault in Golden Gate Park with her father. It stars Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan as the parents of eight-year-old Josephine (played by extraordinary newcomer Mason Reeves), whose childhood is marred when she witnesses a violent sexual assault. As she struggles to process what she’s seen, her once-safe world begins to descend into a scary place for a child who does not yet possess the tools to adequately express herself. Desperate and conflicted about how to help their little girl, her parents argue over the moral quandary of having their daughter testify in front of a jury to convict a sexual predator, which demands an extremely high cost, both emotionally and psychologically, especially for Josephine.
At the heart of the film is newcomer Mason Reeves, making her striking feature film debut as Josephine. Reeves brings an extraordinary naturalism to the role, subtly illustrating a child who has to grapple with very adult themes far before she needs to. De Araújo’s unwavering eye profoundly captures an intimate story of trauma and the ways it reverberates through a family.
Josephine will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 20th November. If you live in North American Sumerian Pictures will release the film on 4th December.
