Murina_(2021)

Modern Films have released the UK Trailer for Croatian coming of age drama Murina. The Cannes (Camera d’Or Award) winning film recently made it’s UK premiere closing this month’s Glasgow Film Festival, now the film is set for nationwide release.

Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovic directs this one which is her feature debut after several short films. we follow teenage girl Julija who  decides to replace her controlling father with his wealthy foreign friend during a weekend trip to the Adriatic Sea.

In MURINA tensions rise between restless teenager Julija and her oppressive father Ante when an old family friend arrives at their Croatian island home. As Ante attempts to broker a life-changing deal, their tranquil yet isolated existence leaves Julija wanting more from this influential visitor, who provides a taste of liberation over a weekend laid bare to desire and violence.

Both an evocative coming-of-age tale and gripping psychological drama, MURINA stars Gracija Filipović (Into the Blue) as the oppressed yet fierce Julija in an electric performance with cast members Danica Čurčić (Silent Heart), Leon Lučev (Circles) and Cliff Curtis (The Dark Horse). Set on a sunny, glittering coastline, MURINA’s beautiful cinematography and atmospheric sound design heighten the emotions of its characters exposed to the sea, sun, rocks and each other. Variety praised the film as “an exceptional debut… a young girl’s passage into adulthood, the perfect, darkly dazzling vehicle for a sunshine noir”.

The film stars Gracija Filipović, Danica Čurčić, Leon Lučev and Cliff Curtis. Martin Scorsese is one of this film’s producers and you can see Murina in UK and Irish cinemas from 8th April (9th May Virtual Cinemas).
