Depending on when you discovered a Luc Besson movie and it was the 1990’s it’s more likely it would have been The Fifth Element. Roll on nearly 20 years the French filmmaker is back in space, for one hell of an epic sci-fi adventure with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and Lionsgate have sent us the first UK trailer. It looks just as nuts as his 1997 cult flick, it’s a personal passion project for Besson and next Summer it will be a reality.

Based on the French comic book Valérian and Laureline which first arrived in 1967 created by Pierre Christin and drawn by Jean-Claude Mézières one of the most popular comics of France. It looks an exuberant cosmic
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets take us to the year 2740 Valerian and Laureline are special operatives for the government charged with maintaining order throughout the Universe.

In Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,Under orders from their commander, Valerian (Dane Dehaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the galaxy. This great, historic city, is under attack by an unknown enemy. Valerian and Laureline must race against time to find the source of this evil and stop it before it destroys the cornerstone of our Universe.

The Fifth Element was a weird and wonderful movie with planets and alien races that could give Star Wars or similar movies/tv shows a run for their money. Besson’s mind has been let loose and on first impressions, it looks awesome and it has to be with nearly $200 million spent on bringing the movie to the big screen. Some of the footage was part of the footage shown at the San Diego Comic-Con which awed those lucky to see it. The Beatles song ‘Because’ plays over the trailer delivering some intensity, wit and humour. 2017 is going to be a big big year for the Space-based movies, from Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2, The God Particle, Alien Covenant, Blade Runner 2049, Star Wars: Episode 8 to name a few.

It’s early days and this trailer doesn’t show off any story, just an epic looking movie with lots of weird creatures, outlandish and cries out Summer!!!

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is set for Summer 2017 UK&Irish Release date, co-starring Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu.
