Top Gun 3 Officially Confirmed By Paramount Pictures
Tom Cruise will return to the skies in the new Top Gun sequel. Paramount Pictures has confirmed a third entry in the Top Gun series is officially in development.
The studio confirmed the news during their presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Thursday. While currently lacking an official title, a script is in the works that will bring back Pete “Maverick” Mitchell for more high-octane aviation. Cruise’s return to the franchise will be no surprise. The rest of the cast is currently unknown.
Whether fellow cast members Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Greg Tarzan Davis, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, or recent Oscar Nominee Monica Barbaro will return remains to be seen, but now that a few of them are bona fide stars since their appearances, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see some or all of them return.
Ehren Kruger, who wrote Maverick, will return to write the script for the sequel. Jerry Bruckheimer will also return to produce the film. Director of the previous entry, Joseph Kosinski, who recently directed F1, is not attached to direct the sequel as of now.
Top Gun: Maverick was a massive success for Paramount Pictures, commercially and critically. Paramount Skydance, Paramount Pictures’ parent company, are in the process of a merger with Warner Bros Discovery. The prospect of a sequel to a film that grossed $1.496 billion worldwide will be tantalising to the studio. Paramount CEO David Ellison has previously emphasised how important the previous film’s success was to the studio.
It followed Pete Mitchell’s return to Top Gun as a teacher, training the next generation of pilots for a high-risk mission. Mitchell crosses paths with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller), son of deceased pilot Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Their contentious relationship blossoms into a strong camaraderie by the end of the film. The strong narrative and impressive aviation stunts garnered many award nominations. This included six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Sound.
