With 2 weeks until The 59th BFI London Film Festival unveils it’s 2015 line up, BFI have announced Todd Haynes Carol will receive it’s UK Premiere at the festival. To celebrate the news Studiocanal have unveiled the film’s UK trailer delivers the films subtle and intimate tone
In Carol we meet a young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) who is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.
While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.
Emotionally expressive is what I’m hearing alot about Carol from those fortunate to see the film already. Whilst been gay in today compared to been a gay woman in 1950, a decade renowned for been the most conservative in moral value, it’s a testament how far we’ve moved on. Whilst prejudice hasn’t been completely eradicated we are now more opened. We do get a sense of the romance, the spark between Blanchett and Mara’s characters but this is a Todd Haynes devastatingly dark will occur be it romantically with hints of tension showing up too.
So is Carol one for the Oscars? With Rooney Mara picking up best actress award at Cannes along with Plaudit where the film has played there is a remote chance it could happen. The film will receive its UK Premiere on Wednesday 14 October at the Odeon Leicester Square, with Todd Haynes and his luminous, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara due to attend. The film is set for 27th November UK Release date (USA 20th November), co-starring Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Cory Michael Smith.
