Itโs already had itโs cinematic release here in UK& ย Ireland and a year after its world premiere at ย Toronto Film Festivalย Emilio Estevezโsย The Wayย is finally heading to American cinemas. The movie stars Emilioโs dadย Martin Sheenย as Tom Avery who learns his free spirited son (played by Estevez) is killed during a storm whilst walking on theย The Way Of St.Jamesย (El Camino de Santiago) and heads over to Spain to collect his sons ashes and possessions.ย Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to honour his sons memory to navigate the 800km trek along northen part of Spain and complete the way. When you see the trailer the movie may not appeal to everyone but I was pleasantly surprised how much I actually enjoyed this movie, Martin Sheen is fantastic in this highlights how great an actor he is. The movie does also showcases how far a person will go to honour a recently deceased family member, hopefully open peoples eyes up to everyone that people will grief in different ways and the so called conventional ways of grieving to work for everyone but most of all dont get yourself into into a โbubbleโ like Sheenโs character and live a little.
Martin Sheen is also joined byย ย Deborah Kara Unger, James Nesbitt,ย andย Yorick van Wageningenย all walking the Way (the actual walk itself). Check out Goncaloโs reviewย hereย and North American fans can watch the movie onย October 7th, as for the DVD/Blu-Ray release for ย UK&Ireland the movie will arrive a few weeks later onOctober 31st.
Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Driven by his profound sadness and desire to understand his son better, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage, leaving his โCalifornia bubble lifeโ behind. Armed with his sonโs backpack and guidebook, Tom navigates the 800 km pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain, but soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. While walking The Camino, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, all broken and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen) a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt) who is suffering from a bout of โwriterโs block.โ From the hardship experienced along โThe Wayโ this unlikely quartet of misfits create an everlasting bond and Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again, and discovers the difference between โThe life we live and the life we chooseโ. THE WAY was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.
