The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum Cast Announced

Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings

The latest cast members to join The Hunt for Gollum in the upcoming Lord Of The Rings prequel have been confirmed this week as Jamie Dornan and Leo Woodall.

The news came during Warner Brosโ€™s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon. Dornan will be joining the cast as Strider (also known as Aragorn), who was previously played by Viggo Mortensen in the original trilogy, with Woodall joining as Halvard, believed to be one of the Rangers of the North accompanying Strider on his hunt.

They will be featuring alongside returning cast members Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum (who also directs). Lee Pace is back as Thranduil, a role he played in The Hobbit films, and Deadline previously reported that Kate Winslet will be joining the film in the role of Marigol.

The film marks a return to New Lineโ€™s beloved Middle-earth franchise, which is based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hunt for Gollum is due to follow Aragornโ€™s quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ringโ€™s location to Sauron. The story, predominantly developed from Tolkienโ€™s footnotes, is set between The Hobbitย andย The Fellowship of the Ring.

Previous films in the wider franchise have grossed nearly $6 billion worldwide, with the movie marking the first live-action theatrical return to Tolkienโ€™s world for Warner Bros. since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou wrote the script for The Hunt for Gollum, with original director Peter Jackson, Boyens, Walsh and Zane Weiner set to produce.

The film is slated for release on December 17th, 2027.
