The Housemaid Author Says the Film Is Better Than the Book
Bestselling author Freida McFadden is surprisingly candid about the new film adaptation of her hit thriller The Housemaid: she believes the movie might actually outshine the book. After seeing an early cut, McFadden admitted she was stunned by how dynamic the story became on screen, even joking that she never expected to say the words, “I think it was better than the book!” She later repeated the sentiment at the film’s premiere, calling the final act “so exciting” and praising the ending for delivering an even bigger punch than the original version on the page.
McFadden, who also served as an executive producer, said the adaptation manages to preserve everything readers love about the novel while elevating it through strong performances and a sharper, more cinematic sense of suspense. She even admitted the movie was so compelling it nearly inspired her to write another instalment in the series.
Director Paul Feig has described the process of adapting the book as a careful balancing act. He and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine aimed to stay true to the spirit of McFadden’s twist-filled story while adjusting certain elements to better fit a visual medium. One of the most significant changes is the newly crafted ending, which Feig believes gives the film a gripping and satisfying finish that feels tailor-made for the big screen.
Starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, the movie brings to life the psychological tension and claustrophobic atmosphere that made the novel a bestseller. With its blend of faithful adaptation and fresh creative choices, the film offers both long-time fans and new audiences a chance to experience the story in an entirely new way, one that McFadden herself says surpasses what she originally imagined.
The Housemaid is set for release in UK and Ireland cinemas on 26th December.
