Daisy Ridley has opened up about the cancellation of The Hunt for Ben Solo, the once-planned Star Wars spinoff that aimed to continue the story of Ben Solo after The Rise of Skywalker. Although she had heard quiet whispers about the project through friends working behind the scenes, Ridley admitted she was still stunned when she learned the film had officially been scrapped. Calling it “the big surprise of the year,” she confessed her reaction was an immediate and unfiltered, “Oh my God!”

The actress explained that while excitement had been building among fans and even some members of the creative team, the final decision lay with studio leaders. Despite positive early buzz and reported enthusiasm within Lucasfilm, the project was ultimately shelved before ever entering production.

What moved Ridley most, however, was the passionate response from fans once the cancellation became public. She described being genuinely touched by the outpouring of support, with people across the world sharing messages, petitioning for the film, and celebrating what the story could have been. Ridley said she loved seeing a “collective positivity” emerge, something she believes is rare and meaningful in such a divided time. Watching fans unite around a shared love for the galaxy far, far away left her feeling grateful and uplifted.

The scrapped film reportedly centred on themes of redemption and legacy, exploring Ben Solo’s journey beyond the events of the sequel trilogy. Though many hoped it would offer closure and new layers to the character, concerns about continuing his story after the trilogy’s ending contributed to the studio’s decision to halt development.

Despite the disappointment, Ridley remains optimistic about the future of Star Wars. She continues to support upcoming projects and has expressed excitement about returning as Rey. And while The Hunt for Ben Solo won’t be moving forward, Ridley’s response (and the fans’) make it clear that the story still lives on in the hearts of many.
