The Batman: Part II & III Won’t Be Filmed Back To Back
After Warner Bros. shared the frustrating news that DC Comics’ The Batman: Part II, the long-awaited sequel to 2022’s The Batman, had received yet another pushback on its release date from 1st October 2027 to 18th February 2028, James Gunn has taken on queries surrounding the filming process behind the film and the threequel, The Batman: Part III. The trilogy is being handled by director Matt Reeves and stars Robert Pattinson in the titular role of the Dark Knight, known as Bruce Wayne by day, with Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell also appearing in the first film.
Reeves cited the comics Year One, The Long Halloween and Ego as the inspiration for the story, alongside visual and tonal influence from Alfred Hitchcock’s filmmaking and the New Hollywood era.
Following critical acclaim and box office success, with a global gross of $772.3 million to become the seventh highest-grossing picture of 2022, the film’s sequel was confirmed in April 2022, and later updates confirmed Wright, Serkis and Farrell would be returning alongside Pattinson, as well as newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance. However, The Batman: Part II has been halted by three pushbacks to its release date, with the first release date slated as 3rd October 2025, which was then extended by a year to 2nd October 2026 due to the Hollywood strikes.
It has also been confirmed there will be a third film to conclude Reeves’ trilogy on the Caped Crusader.

To keep DC fans at ease, DC Studios co-chief Gunn cleared up rumours that the two films would be shot at the same time to curb any further release-date issues, with a recent Threads session seeing the Superman director quizzed on the filming process behind The Batman: Part II and The Batman: Part III.
Gunn responded that he has to “deny” that the two follow-up films to the 2022 comic adaptation have been filmed “simultaneously.” Sequels being filmed at the same time is a common occurrence in Hollywood, seen in the 28 Years Later films, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and Marvel’s last two Avengers films.
The filmmaker had previously confirmed the first sequel’s script was completed in July last year, and Reeves unveiled some teaser shots on social media in July.
The Batman: Part II hits cinemas on 18th February 2028.
