Deadline is reporting that A24 – alongside Picturestart – is gearing up to add another horror film to their diverse slate with a new interpretation of The Masque of the Red Death, based on the short story by Edgar Allen Poe with Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You, Immaculate) in talks to star in the film.

Described as “a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name”, the film is set to be written and directed by Charlie Polinger, who has been making his feature-length directorial debut with the upcoming The Plague starring Joel Edgerton. Shooting on “Death” is rumoured to start this year but the details of the new film are under wraps.

Poe’s original short story “follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey”. It was originally made into a film in 1964 by the legendary Roger Corman and starred Vincent Price.

Sweeney is soon to be seen in Ron Howard’s Eden opposite Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law, and is currently filming The Housemaid, based on the hit novel alongside Amanda Seyfried and directed by Paul Feig. She also stars as legendary boxer Christy Martin in a biopic of her life due this year, directed by David Michรดd (The King), and is set to star as legendary actress Kim Novak alongside David Jonsson as Sammy Davis Jnr is Scandalous!, the feature directorial debut of Oscar Nominee Colman Domingo.
