Steve Caple Jnr Officially Directing I Am Legend 2

The Creed II helmer could reunite with Michael B. Jordan...

I Am Legend sequel on the way

After years of speculation, Steven Caple Jr (Man on Fire) has confirmed he is officially developing I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros in a recent interview with Collider.

The first film was a loose adaptation of the 1954 Richard Matheson novel of the same name, which has also been adapted as The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man. It starred Will Smith as Robert Neville, a virologist who believes himself to be the last human survivor of a virus that killed 90% of Earth’s population, and transformed the remainder into flesh-eating mutants.

It’s been reported on and off for years that there is a sequel in the works, with rumours in 2024 claiming that Caple was circling the project, which was supposedly due to star Michael B. Jordan, with Akiva Goldsman returning to write the script.

For those that don’t know, Caple made his directorial debut with the 2016 crime drama The Land before moving on to direct Creed II. He then took on Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023. Next up for Caple is the new Netflix adaptation of Man on Fire, where he directed the first two episodes of the series and serves as an executive producer. Man on Fire, which will premiere later this month.

There are also rumours that Smith is returning for the sequel, which will confuse those who saw the film in cinemas, as his character sacrifices himself so fellow survivors Anna (Alice Braga) and Ethan (Charlie Tahan) could escape with a cure for the virus. Famously, however, in the film’s rejected original ending, Neville realises that the infected are not the mindless monsters he believed them to be, and that they consider him to be a monster.

I Am Legend 2 is currently in development, and no further information has been announced.
