The upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake has been given an official director: Curry Barker, who has directed the upcoming Obsession.  This will be the second fresh remake in the notorious film series and the overall tenth installment, apparently rebooting the Leatherface story once again.

The original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released in 1971 by horror master Tobe Hooper and writer Kim Henkel, starring Marilyn BurnsPaul A. PartainEdwin NealJim Siedow, and Gunnar Hansen. Its infamous story focuses on a gang of teenagers who find themselves targets of the brutal killer Leatherface and his family of cannibals.

Hooper’s film became an influential classic and spawned three sequels directly related to the original film, released in 1986, 1990 and 1995. There was then a 2003 remake by Marcus Nispel, which received a 2006 prequel titled The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

In 2013, Texas Chainsaw 3D came as a direct sequel to Hooper’s first film, and 2017 saw another prequel to the 1974 film. A 2013 sequel was released under the title Leatherface, whilst there was also another film set fifty years after the original by David Blue Garcia in 2022 for Netflix.

Barker’s film will have a separate canon from that of the upcoming JT Mollner TV series version, produced under A24, with Glen Powell (How To Make a Killing) also a producer. Production credits for the remake will reportedly be shared between Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Pat Cassidy and Stuart Manashil.

Barker is set to release his own horror film, Obsession, starring Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette and Andy Richter. The film follows a young man who wishes on a supernatural toy to have his crush fall in love with him, soon learning to be careful what you wish for.

Obsession hits theatres on May 15th.
