Spaceballs sequel receives official title
Following initial news that Mel Brooks‘ sci-fi spoof comedy Spaceballs, originally released in 1987, is getting a sequel, the filmmaker and Amazon MGM Studios have just released the official title for the follow-up film.ย Spaceballs: The New Oneย will see original cast members Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Brooks himself return, in addition to newcomers Keke Palmer,ย Lewis Pullmanย andย Anthony Carrigan.ย The sequel is set to be directed by Josh Greenbaum, with Josh Gad,ย Dan Hernandezย andย Benji Samitย sharing writing credits as a trio.
The original film parodied several classic sci-fi releases, such as the originalย Star Warsย films by creator George Lucas, alongside Stanley Kubrickโsย 2001: A Space Odysseyย and Alienย by Dan OโBannonย andย Ronald Shusett. It centred on a princess being saved from a band of evil forces by a mercenary and his extraterrestrial companion, with the band, known as the spaceballs, finding themselves lost on a desert moon.
Brooks’s Spaceballs took a budget of $22.7 million and turned it into a worldwide gross of $40.3 million, yet earned a mixed bag of reviews.
According to reports, Spaceballs: The New One reads as โa Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Filmโ. The project was first teased by writer Gad back in 2024, who took to Instagram to share: โJust handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing Iโve ever worked on, and I am so freaking excited.”
Spaceballs: The New Oneย flies into cinemas on the 23rd April, 2027.
