“A Complete Disservice to the Character” – Hayley Atwell on Captain Carter’s Death

Hayley Atwell returning for Avengers: Doomsday ?

Like lots of fans, Hayley Atwell was beyond disappointed in the death of beloved Agent Peggy Carter.

During a Q&A at For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell told the audience that she was not happy with Captain Carter’s storyline in her 2022 comeback amidst others inย Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.ย

Captain Carter, an alternate to the original Captain America, cameoed in the film – after being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011 – was vividly killed off by Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) with her own shield. A moment that truly left viewers shocked and confused.

At the convention, Atwell stated, “If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.”

She even furthered this by discussing how she pleaded with colleagues to change the scene. “I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?’ And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.'”

Continuing, “I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character.”

Expected to return inย Avengers: Doomsdayย later this year, Atwell said Captain Carter was having “fun” in the guise, away from the beloved Agent Peggy Carter. She hopes to be able to bring back more of the same. “I hope maybe one day in the future they’ll give her more in that capacity,” the capacity of the Captain, she suggested.

Since Carter’s cameo inย Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Atwell has discussed her upset with the character’s storyline on other occasions as well. On theย Happy Sad Confused podcast in 2023, Atwell said, “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently you can’t go, so, egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”

Also at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention, earlier in the panel, Atwell also revealed that she uses Carter’s line “I know my value” in her contract negotiations with Marvel.

“If I’m able to say these lines with conviction, I’ve got to embody them myself,” she added.

Though things are left up to the Marvel officials, hopefully Carter gets a semi-decent storyline in her reprisal later this year inย Avengers: Doomsday.
